STANLEY PARK ACCESS Road closure to affect tourism OPEN LETTER TO VAN- COUVER PARKS BOARD This letter is to inform you of our strong opposition to the clos- ing of the north exit from Stanley Park from 3 to 6 p.m. I can only assume you are not aware of the impact this decision will have on all the peoples from near and far who are legitimate users of the park. They count on an access route out of the park to the North Shore as a given fact; and would think it tudicrous in the extreme, to have to go back around the Denman are2 (to get turned around and juggle their way back into already congested traffic lanes to get across the bridge. It is only reasonable to concede tnat many tourists will be so con- fused and frustrated they will not get to the North Shore, at least on that given day. The loss of business to North Shore business establishments will only be known after the fact. The frustration of the tourists will be felt for years to come. There are many other legitimate users of the park on a daily basis. We certainty are aware that there is a problem with speeders short-cutting through the roads of the park; and we agree they should be stopped. We would like to make a sugges- tion that you barricade the en- trance to Pipe-Line Road, thereby stopping access to the short-cut which would be any advantage Closure supported OPEN LETTER TO VAN- COUVER PARKS BOARD I am writing in support of the closure of Stanley Park to the rush hour commuters. As a North Shere resident, I have noticed a major improvement in the traffic flow the last few nights coming home around 5 p.m. Previously, it took me 30 minutes to gct home of which 10 minutes was spent lining up to get on the Lions Gate Bridge. In the last three evenings, I have not had to line up at all and there wasn't any of this nagging stop, start, stop, start on the causeway. 1 am appealing to you not to bow to the demands of the few impatient drivers who are in- convenienced and to keep the bar- tiers up permanently. Let the park be returned to the people for their iid Mailbox élicy enjoyment end let the North Shore commuters get home quickly and safely. You have made the right deci- sion. This park closure is long over waiting their turn. This would mean that only legitimate users of the park would seek access on to the bridge from the park. . We also suggest that for some interval of time after such a closure that one of the new photo radar machines be used to catch any speeders on the main route through the park. I'm certain if stiff fines are exacted from these people it will more than compen- 7 - Wednesday, March 29, 1989 - North Shore News sate for the costs incurred. We implore you to reconsider the manner in which you handle this problem so that the offending parties are not only thwarted in the abuse of our park roads, but we would encourage you to put the offenders on notice of heavy fines to be levied against anyone who does not.
