2 - Miriday, April 3, 1987 - North Shore News Humphreys appointed to gaming commission FORMER West Vancouver mayor Derrick Humphreys has been named as one of five Social Credit supporters ap- pointed to the B.C. Gaming: Commission. The announcement was made by Attorney General Brian Smith Wednesday, at the same time that he announced an increase to $5 of the betting limit in charity casinos in the province, and a realignment of the payout from monies col- lected by casino operators. Smith said Humphreys would jein former policeman and ex- president of the Social Credit Par- ty Bernie Smith of Burnaby, Ald. Vicki Kuhl of Saanich, farmer C. Ellison Framst of Fort St. John_ and housewife Marianne Crockett on the commission. In the March 9 Throne Speech, the Social Credit government an- nounced the appointment of Richard Macintosh as chairman of the commission which is charged with ‘“‘reviewing the options for casino gambling’ and reporting back by Nov. 30. When the attorney general was asked whether there would be cause for concern that the ap- pointrzents were partisan, he said that there were ‘‘some’’ active Socreds, hut the chairman and vice-chairman (former RCMP deputy commissioner Tom Venner) were not, and the others had no such identification. | A review of the delegate lists of Sociel Credit supporters who at- tended the Whistler ‘eadership convention last July show that , housewife Crockett and her hus- band Ed were delegates from Rossland/Trail, and that farmer Framst’s wife. was on the list of delegates from North Peace River. Until the new commission reports back in November, there will be a freeze on granting additional licences to any charities, said the attorney general. As well, no licences will be issued for casino events at loca- tions other than those already in operation, or where .they have already taken place. . More than $32 million was rais- ed in B.C. through casinos in the last fiscal year, which ended last month with $24 million in prizes, and the remaining $8 million split among the operaters, charities and government — $5.1 million, $2.3 million, and $400,000 respectively.
