Therefore, it is greatly ap- preciated when I receive a ques- tion, concern or problem which is of specific interest to you. over the garden gate by Geoff Tobiasson In response to some of the more common concerns and questions raised (or should I say planted) by you and other North Shore gardeners, | offer this harvest of answers. Is it too late to plant my tulips, daffodils, and other fall bulbs? Technically, yes; it is too late to expect a decent show of flowers from your bulbs. Yet I still recom- | mend planting now because, even though you may not get the ex- “pected show of color this year, if ff you don’t, the bulbs will dry out and perish over the next few weeks. I had a terrible infestation of tent caterpillars last year, will I have it again and if 1 do, what can I do to control them? Caterpillars, especially the tent caterpillars, are cyclical pests. Every few years we will suffer a plague (beginning to scare you) of these pests over a period of years then, as the natural predator popu- lation builds, the problem abates. Cycles generally last three or four years, therefore it is likely you will have the problem again this year and those of you who were lucky last year will not be this time around, It is not commonly recommend- ed to use insect sprays as the first line of defence against these or any other crawly little foreigners in cases of mild infestation because you may be killing some of the || natural predators as well. Better to simply prune the nests out of the trees or shrubs, then seek and destroy any survivors fends like war games doesn’t it?).
