Ly 2- Wednesday, April 17, 1985 - North Shore News BRIDGING THE GAP Gapilano meets new Eastern twin sister EAST MET west last week when Chambly, Quebec MP Richard Grise visited Capilano MP Mary Collins as part of a political twin city pro- gram. Set up vy Prime Minister Brian Muironey’s office, the twinning program has been established to encourage MPs ‘from different Cana- dian, ridings to meet with each other and develop an understanding of the other's constituency. “If you don’t come here,”’ Grise said in an interview © with the News, ‘if you stay in the province of Quebec, then you'll never know what problems are going on elsewhere. “Now if an issue is pro- posed in the commons by Mary, we'll have more feei- ing and understanding on it,’’ Grise continued.. ‘‘1 car explain an issue to my caucus and to the members of Quebec. Otherwise Mary stays in B.C. and we're all apart. It’s been that way for -the past 20 years.’’ Agreeing with Grise, Col- lins said the twinaing: ‘‘pro- -motes a greater understan- ding among members.”* “It makes us better deci- sion makers,’’ she said, ‘‘It breaks down the provincial, regional barriers. As federal MPs we represent the whole of Canada. In politics you have to compromise to max- imize gains, so to be suc- cessful, the national gov- ernment must have all parts of the country working together.” As his first visit to Van- couver, Grise said he was in awe of the scenery. “It’s a tremendous coun- try. You can see it in pic- - tures, but to actually live it. When I was golfing at Stanley Park, in one look | could see the ocean and the docks and the ‘mountains with their snow peaks. I’ve. never seen that before in my life, except on television or in magazines.”’ Grise and his wife. Pier- rette lived with a West Van- couver family during their stay, and Grise said he got an opportunity to mingle with the people of Van- couver.'‘‘I’ve talked to many people from Quebec,’* he said, ‘‘and they’ve said how much they appreciate it here.” . The difference between . Chambly and West Van- couver is small, said Grise, but he adds that Collins has more elderly people in her constituency, and Chambly, just south of Montreal, has a small amount of agriculture. The main industry is an air- craft engine company. - Grise said business rela- tions between Chambly and Vancouver will be kept open for the future. “The French Chamber of Commerce asked me to fix a meeting with some aeronautical firms. We're not just a party — we're much more than that.’’ Said Collins: ‘‘We’ve developed a network, and with that in place it will be easy to maintain business, professional, commercial and industrial contacts." Collins will probably be visiting Chambly in September, she says.
