Ao - Sunday, December 2, 1984 - North Shore News SS cclitor ica] ee News Viewpoint : Signal nonsense omething needs to be done FAST about the nonsense of Ambleside’s new traffic signals at 14th and 16th Streets. Many West Vancouverites wonder why they were needed at all at this time. For much of the day they merely impose pointless delays on traffic between 13th and 17th. They’re not synchronized with the 15th Street lights, which are sensor-controlled for north-south traffic and therefore of varying length. Equally questionable are the rush hour ‘‘no-left-turn’’ signs. From 7 to 9 a.m., with minimal westbound traffic, the eastbound ban is totally unnecessary. The bans are also in force both ways, morning and afternoon, all seven days of the week---with the ridicu- lous result that drivers risk tickets for turn- ing left off a deserted Marine Drive at 8:55 a.m. on Sunday morning. The worst effect, however, is on mer- chants along the south side of Marine and on Bellevue, numerous of whom report an alarming drop in business from 4 to 6 p.m., normally one of their busiest times. Between those hours, no left turns between 13th and 18th encourages potential customers to give up on ‘‘difficult’’ Ambleside altogether and, instead, do their shopping at Park Royal or drive straight through to Dundarave. That’s hardly the way to revitalize business in’ Ambleside, one of council's stated priorities. If Mayor Humphreys and_ his aldermen are serious about it, they should rethink the whole traffic signal situation there THIS WEEK. Before Village stores lose any more des- perately needed Christmas dollars. Rich witch! mployment Minister Flora Mac- Donald denies that she’s conducting a witch hunt by hiring 700 new civil ser- vants at a cost of $30 million to track down unemployment insurance cheats. She also says it will help put people back to work — and she’s obviously right in both her claims. Canada’s 1,305,000 jobless will be reduced by 700. And no private-enterprise witch in these hard times could get a $30 million government prant just to fuel her broomstick.
