A NEWS EXCLUSIVE Chretien finding ‘I JEAN CHRETIEN may be a member of the party that the majority of the West loves to hate but he comes away from each election campaign with increased populari- ty — even among political foes. By JOANNE MacDONALD That may be the reason why he said in an exclusive interview conducted Tuesday afternoon with North Van- couver-Burnaby Liberal candidate lona Campagnolo that the 1984 campaign is turning out to be one of the easiest of his career. “‘There is less hostility now than in 1979. Then I did 53 ridings and the hostility was unbelievable. I had to reach out to get the hands of the people from their pockets,’’ he said. ‘‘It’s a very easy campaign.”’ The veteran politician will not entertain thoughts of the Liberals losing the election. He dismisses the headline grabbing departure of Liberal campaign chief Bill Lee as-a decision arrived at by both Lee and Prime Minister Turner. And he is equally indifferent when it comes to public opinion polls. But he does become visibly moved when he discusses a subject near and dear to his heart: national unity. ““There’s a constant shift JEAN CHRETIEN and Iona Cam of priorities in politics and in public administration. | would be inclined to tell you that it (the election) was More important in 1980 because we were just on the verge of the referendum in Quebec. And we managed to come back in power and we managed to play the domi- nant role in winning the vote in Quebec so that Quebec would not separate,’’ he recalls. ‘‘I think we were in a more dangerous situation in terms of the national life than we are today. Today we are having some economic problems -—— we always have economic problems. I’ve been 21 years in politics and its never been a good year. When I was parliamentary secretary to Mitchell Sharp he had four per cent infla- tion, three per cent unemployment, a $500 mil- lion deficit and the Globe and Mail was asking for his resignation. Everything is relative in a moving world.”’ He is equally animated when he discusses his new role as External Affairs SUBARU SUMMER pagnolo — a West Coast swing for an old party friend. ss hostil “NEWS photo tan Smith All - Friday, August 10, 1984 - North Shore News 7 Minister. Just returned from a whirlwind trip to the Far East, Chretien said he was both pleased and surprised that he was received by top Officials despite the fact Canada was in the throes of an election campaign. ‘1 believe that the next century will be the Pacific. Vancouver will become a more important city for Canada, because it’s our door to the Pacific. In the last century, Montreal was our door to the Atlantic,”’ says Chretien. He is also of the opinion that Canada should not play the role of a ‘‘yes man’’ to its American neighbors. ‘“‘The NDP presume that the Americans are always wrong and you have the Conservatives who presume that the Americans are always right,’’ says Chretien. ‘“‘When you are a Liberal, you seek the best solution that is practical, middle of the road, bringing the people together instead of trying to divide them.”’ 2 DOOR HARDTOP GRAND LUXE MODEL x AM/FM Stereo 4 Speakers * Halogen Lights * Tachometer * Metallic Paint * Remote Trunk Release * Velour Upholstery * Tinted Glass # Front Wheel Drive * Tilt Steering and much mores Reg $9 9B5 80, $8,985 Only PLUS $250 PDI + Freight while stocks last only GL Hardtop 2 DOOR HARDTOP SPECIAL LUXURY EDITION This limited edition model has everything in the Gl model, but in addition & Air Conditioning * Sunroot & Power Steering, Windows Mirrors * Cruise Control * Digital Dash «*® Alloy Wheels Reg $12,985 Save “bnly SD 11 885 ( US $250POI + | regi while stow ks last ority MOTOR CARS 1970 LIIVITE 1235 MARINE DRIVE, N.
