becoming a recognized part '*[
of our legal system to deal
with differing expectations

In many areas of the
world, where a man and a
woman grow up in the same
economic circumstances,
and with the same values and
the same attitudes, both
know the rules of. the game.

In North. “America, people
from different religions, dif-
ferent back grounds, and.
different cultures marry. for

Basically, a matriage con-
tract is just like any other
legal contract — it sets out
what the parties to the con-
tract promise to each other.

assets, who: will make deci-
sions about.a house, car or
major investment purchase.

deal with more serious pro-
blems, such as what happens
to: ‘property if a marriage
breaks up, who gets custody
of the children, who is to
make maintenance
payments, and for how
much.
