WHEN DAVE moved in with Susan, her two chiidren Jane, 7, and Tommy, 4, already knew him and they had had some good times together. Dave thought he had a good relationship with the kids, but when he came to share their home it was different. Jane and Tommy were used to Susan's full-ume attention at home. Dave was great entertainment on trips and outings, but they weren't ready to share their mother with him at home. They were also confused about what to call him and how their loyalty could be divided between him and “real” Dad whom they visited on a regular basis. Dave was hurt by their change in attitude and reacted with angry outbursts alternating with = all-out efforts being overly friendly. Susan was frustrated by the unexpected reactions of her children and anxious about her relationship with Dave. At this point they shared some of their concerns with the Family Services counsellor who had worked with Susan and her first husband and discovered they were not alone in facing such unexpected changes. The North Shore Family Services counselling _ staff have become very aware of many of the common pitfalls of the Blended Family and have a wealth of in- formation, helpful hints and tips to share with step- parents or people con- sidering establishing a new family.
