GE mailbox ee Will Hamilton survive Carson? OPEN LETTER TO NORTH VAN SCHOOL BOARD CHAIRMAN MARG JESSUP Hamilton Junior High School is a melting pot of society to which some people refer as a dumping ground for misfits. None of the children 1 have en- countered fit into the misfit category: rather they are a sampling of the United Nations. Granted, there are some children who come from less fortunate circumstances than others, and need that extra bit of attention that Hamilton School (by this I mean that complement of people that make a school) and the Mastery Program offer. A sampling of the children Japan ‘is Dear Editor: 1 would like to comment on an article by Bob Hunter entided “The Long Metric Mile” published in the March 17 edition of your newspaper. In the subject article, Mr. Hunter states “I got to be the one to tell him that Japan had just given up on its metric program”. Following a consultation by my of- who frequent my home are Victor, Darryl, Ryan and Cheryl, all natives of the Squamish and Capilano reserves; John an ESL boy of Greek origin, Archie a Filipino; and many others. These kids are all close friends who compete with each other proudly and actively in the Hamilton sports program. My daughter, Sheena, tells me about a blind boy, Ken, who sings when he walks down Hamilton's hallways. and a crippled boy, Scott, who does “wheelies” for them. Are these misfits? Not in my books! For me, this is what society ts all about. When the children move to Carson Graham, will the special attention still be there? Will Hamilton the teachers who care sull phone me about their concerns for my children when they are falling behind, or contact me with pride when they are excelling. Or will these kids find them- selves lost in a vast, totally structured institunon? What will happen to the feeling of achievement expenenced at Hamilton by the grade ten students when it is time to move on and they know they have earned their place in the upper echelon called Carson Graham? Have you really examined all the alternatives in keeping this small, active, caring community alive? | have heard rumours that the Board itself is considering Hamilton as its offices. Is there a way that we can combine the above success story with the Board's needs? Where do the next so-called “misfits” go when they leave grade seven from Queen Mary, Ridgeway, Norgate and Lonsdale? How many children will we lose along the way? What happens to our future generations of business men and women, politicians, and just plain hard workers and achievers? Can you assure me that this up-and-coming = generation will have a solid place in society? Don't they deserve the same chance that the other Hamilton success stones have had in previous years? I] think that they do. Sally Collins Mother North Vancouver very evidently metric’ ficials with the Japanese Embassy in Ottawa and the Canadian Embassy in Tokyo, we have found that there is no foundation whatsoever to Mr. Hunter's statement. It has been verified that to the best of our knowledge the use of metric units in Japan as established by the Measurement Law of 1970 remains in effect. 1 believe anyone at the staff of the No wilderness, this! OPEN LETTER TO MUNICIPAL AFFAIRS MINISTER BILL VANDER ZALM Please note that your colleague the Minister of Lands, Parks and Housing has, as you are probably aware, just extended Cypress Bowl Park all the way to Deeks Lake This makes ndiculous the assertion of West Vancouver that our humble one acre fee-simple lots in DL 1123 are tne last) “wilderness” fands on the edge of Van- couver and must be preserved from the low impact) log houses which some of our members wish to build oa their own land 2foriat (DL 1123 “wilderness” presently contains numerous cabin, a CNCP microwave transmission facility. and a much-used roadside parking).
