How Mary came face to face (SuperValu ocsen with a nine-foot serpent By OLGA RUSKIN It's not an everyday ex- perience to come face-to- face with a nine-foot ser- pent. But Mary Bentley of North Vancouver did have this incredible experience in 1976, and it’s one she'll never forget. The result is her newly- published book Gabriola: Petroglyph Island ($5.95, Sono Nis Press, 1981) which she wrote and to which her husband Ted, a Capilano College math teacher, has contributed photographs ot the 50 or more petroglyphs Mary uncovered on Gabriola land owned by Weldwood of Canada Ltd. Petroglyphs, a form of rock art, are rock carvings made by the ancestors of the Coast Salish, though they are found elsewhere in the world. These rock carvings are hard to date and the ones Mary found she guesses can be anywhere from 200 to 2,000 years old. But there is an aura of mystery around petroglyphs, as Mary explains: “They remam one of the least understood cultural legacies of the Northwest Coast Indian people .” For Mary the moment of discovering the Gabnola Weldwood site will never be forgotten. Her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Harold Cliffe. have lived at Degnen Bay on Gabriola Island for a number of years and are interested m archaeology. A petroglyph of a killer whale (the photograph of which is on the book cover) ts on their property Mary's discovery came as a result of a casual remark — “Oh, yes, I saw some carved marks ian the = sandstone bedrock near the southern road” — made by a ferry traveller to her mother Mary. her husband. two children Krista and Jonathan, and her parents set off to see if they could find the inland petroglyph site, somewhat unusual because petroglyphs = are normally found at the water's cdge as in Nanaimo and on the Chiffe’s property Blackberry, wild rose. salal and green sword ferns hned the abandoned logging road which the famnly followed Then they came to what Mary descnbes as “a secluded = clearing encucled by a second growth Dougias fir. oak and wild rose © They spotted the petroglyph of — an regular ovend shape which the stranger had mentoned Then Mary beat down turned back the heavy moss large faint on Uhe grouad and came face to face with a petrogtyph of a mythical bard like four fect long and two and a crcalture hall feet wide Pulling away more moss she came upom the nine foot long sempent and Jater up to SO more petroglyphs Since uncovering the site Mary has feos spent ycan carctally recording the pelroglyphs there making rubbings ol thean and hon ation and scatc map all ot whee bh she has turned over lo the provincial govern ment beds photographs of the petrogtyphs aad the rubbings illustrate what a marvellous find this is, about which Mary writes so movingly. Mary contacted Weld- wood soon after finding the gite. They were “really excited and very interested.” This year in February Weldwood donated the 12 JUST FOR Sears Look for our ad on Page C7 and enter Captlano Mall's Fiesta of Vaiues Colouring Contest First prize is an entire Fail ward- robe from Sears Second pnzes include one girl's bike and one boy's bike Alt _ entnes will be dis- played in the main mall area So get your entnes in today AND...
