Superb summer supper ,

Quick, get some more of
those little new potatoes and
make a real summer dinner.
Potato salad, devilled eggs,
cold cuts or cold chicken,
pickled beets, radishes and
cucumber--it looks = as
colourful and elegant as it
eats.

Pick out the smallest
potatoes and boil or steam
them in their skin until
they're just tender. Over-
cooking gives them the
mealiness that you want to
avoid.

As soon as they're cool

enough to handle, pull off

the skin and cube the
potatoes into a bowl. Add, in
any order, sliced radishes,
finely chopped:-celery, finely
chopped green onion or
chives, lemon pepper, celery
seed if you wish, and finally
a good = spoonful of
mayonnaise.

With a spatula mix it all
together without mashing--
each ingredient should keep
its own character. More
mayonnaise if it seems a bit
dry.

Do all this at least an hour
before the meal, longer if
you can manage. It does the
salad good to marinate. But
marinate it in the
refrigerator--potato salad
improperly stored is one of

the prime causes of summer
gastric problems.

Food prices rise

OTTAWA (UPC) - A
family of four had to spend
$83.96 weekly for a
nutritious food basket last
month, Agriculture Canada
said Wednesday in reporting
food prices rose 1.41 per
cent in July and by 12.7 per
cent in the last year.

The agriculture depart-
ment said it cost 89 cents
more a week in July than in
June to feed a family of four
because of higher prices for
pork and fresh fruit. A
nutritious food basket would
cost an average $83.95
weekly.

The monthly survey of
supermarket prices in a
dozen Canadian cities
showed pork prices rose 6.71
per cent between June and
July while the cost of fresh
fruit went up 7.56 per cent.

all. (if you feel rich, some
shrimp, fresh or canned,
mashed in with that mixture,
makes a super devilled egg.)
Spoon it all equally back into
the white halves, and shake a
bit of paprika over top for
class.

garlic powder, or a spoonful
of hot chutney--you may
turn out to be the Devilled
