Leaders gather for Tito’s funeral LONDON (UPI) - The funeral for Josip Broz Tito, the peasant who defied Stalin. and became the fonder of modern Yugoslavia, will see one of the greatest gatherings of world leaders and European royalty in recent years. Among those scheduled to attend the ceremonies in Belgrade Thursday are Vice President Walter Mondale, China’s Chairman Hua Kuo- Feng, British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, West German Chancellor Helmut Schmidt and the leaders of India and Pakistan. It was assumed French President Valery Giscard d‘Estaing will also be present and that the Soviet Union would send Foreign Minister Andrei Gromyko to represent ailing President ‘Leonid Brezhnev. Similar gatherings of world leaders have occurred in recent years only at the funerals of French President Charles de Gaulle, West German Chancellor Konrad Adenauer, and Britain's wartime leader Winston Churchill. If the pattern followed at recent state funerals are an indication, however, the Belgrade gathering does not necessarily mean there will be serious working con- ferences between the leaders. Most of the leaders will spend only between 24 to 36 hours in the Yugoslave capital. Much of this time will be taken up with at- tending the funeral ceremonies and with protocol calls on the new Y ugoslav leadership. Meetings between visiting foreign statesmen are unlikely to amount to more than courtesy calls after the state funeral. Even so, such meetings can be used to renew pohtical contacts or to make arrangements for subsequent meetings. President Lyndon B. Johnson took advantage of his presence at Adenauer'’s funeral in Bonn to hold bnef talks with other leaders on ways to end the Vietnam war, an example followed by Richard M. Nixon when he flew to Paris to attend De Gaulle's funeral. Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi and Pakistani President Mohammed Zia Ul-haq, who cut short a visit to China and cancelled a tnp to North Korea, will also attend the funeral. Other leaders scheduled to attend the funeral include the presidents of Portugal, Austria, Finland, Bangladesh and the prime minister of Turkey. Among the visiting royalty will be the kings of Belgium, Sweden, Norway and the pmace of Denmark, as well as Pnnce Philip, husband of Britain's Queen Elizabeth IL.
