i mailbox A9 - Friday, May 4, 1984 - North Shore News - Questioning school. board priorities Dear Editor Recently, Trustee Margie Goodman and | voted against approval of the school budget because we do not agree with the priorities set by our Board within the total amount provided from the provincial government bud- get. Over the last ten years, North Vancouver enrolment in the schools has declined by 30% and the downward trend continues at this time but the majority bloc on the School Boayd is determined to main- tain the same level of senior administrators. The district superintendent has resigned to take another position and | believe that his is an oppor- tune time to reduce the senior administration at the Board office from four to three peo- ple. We currently have three assistant superintendents ear- ning over $75,000 including benefits and any of these in- dividuals could be assigned to Acting Superintendent at a cost saving of over $100,000 per year in tax dollars. Vic- toria School District, with a much larger student popula- tion has functioned well on this basis for the last year and Surrey with twice our school population has only five senior administrators. . Another area where $55,000 cost to the taxpayer could be reduced is in the ex- penses and fees paid by District #44 for participation in the B.C. School Trustees Association. There is no accountability by the B.C.S.T.A. for their opera- tions involving over 2'% milhon dollars of tax money throughout the province Provincial functions achieve very little in direct benefit to our students in) North Van- couver schools. Trustee time and energy and the funds should be directed to local ac tivities for the benefit of education om North Van- COUNET Pinally, another cxample can be found in the teacher Salary Schedule whereby out teachers ace patd on a bigher Seale than Wancouvet teachers who work with larger class sizes) Ht the Van COUNEE Salary Scale was used wn North Van there would be oa reduction Of approx vmately $YSO 000 ta the budpet tor salaries } have provided three ox amples oof bucdyet changes that tecal over SSO OOO rt youu Ce ocetedd oo teustees hiad Chanped oc prrorties Phe budget could be reduced dry thos aineuat Gr oat couhd well tre Spent orn pore scnvany cortprheyy rire tit ool teachers, fea her andes or custodial stati wlhrerse jeobes tte thew threatened bey thre SON Pherae preva ibies tet De percents orl otha pooxssnedal poyorn frac tal Dds Ross Regan N Van School Lrustec Arthritis r Is paying off. “FOR INFORMATION CONTACT YOUR ARTHRITIS SOCIETY. - “ew NBG 10°x17” Hibachi ARBECUE Heavy cast iron . and hardwood handles.
