He holds the work of Zille in high regard and was the one who suggeste the Zille show to the Presentation House curator. : Says Arden, “I don’t want to draw ~ any relationship between the ovo bodies of work, but he’s definitely a very important photographer and one of my favourites. He’s very unknown here. It's 19th century work, it’s the turn of the century, but his vision is so modern. “[r’s uncanny. 1 can’t think of any parallel to him at all. He’s basically shooting in a Robert Frank snapshot __ esthetic. He’s doing it at the highest level and decades and decades before anyone else. He could be as much an inspiration for a young photographer today as Robert Frank. It’s totally fresh. “Ee was using these as studies (for drawings), but I don’t really believe that: He may have started out that way but the evidence of the work suggests NEWS photo Terry Peters that at some point he must have had a collection of some of his earlier photographic werk at Presentation some sense that he was creating a pret- ent direction. “{ was interested a lot more in some kind of notion of his- - torical objectivity and more of a political kind of view of things. I just lost interest in showing this work. But now, when I was looking at it again, I saw a lot of similarities and echoes in my later work that can be traced through back to this work. There is some kind of a continuity,” Arden says. The subject matter can be divided into two broad cate- gories: portraits or fi and urban textures. But says Arden, “1 don’t think the subject matter is so important as it would be in a more documentary or hoto-journalistic kind of work. Ultimately it’s all about a kin of vision.” -Most of the portraits were shot in Vancouver. His fellow artistic friends proved ready subjects. “The portraits aren’t really about their personalities so much. 1 was interested in some idea of corporeal presence. and orchestra for a Good . concerts.; Friday concert and service. .
