For although fat is fat, and a calorie is a calorie, the fact is that men and women gain and lose weight differently, and for different psychological reasons. While a woman in our culture is constantly reminded to watch her figure, and usually becomes diet-conscious at an early age, American men find too much preoccupation with diet somehow “womanly”. And while excess pounds are unattractive on any body, we are far more tolerant of the male with the “beer belly” than we are of the female with the “midriff bulge”. As a consequence, men in our culture can slip into an overweight lifestyle without really giving their situation much thought.
