And he should know considering he has presided over the venera- ble business since 1980. Since he took over it has expanded to its present five loca- tions, including three new openings in the last wo years. Although the grand opening of the new store is certainly reason to celebrate, Burritt Bros. Carpets is no stranger to the area. In fact, this is the third location the business has had on the North Shore. The original North Vancouver store was closed when the company opened its Coquitlam location. However, the idea that North Shore customers could be lured tc Coquitlam by chat oucler’s large selection turned our to be a mistake. “We have come to the conclusion that people on the North Shore want the full service and selection on the North Shore and travelling across town wasn't going to work,” said Burritt. he Bay 7 How it all started Burritt Bros. Floorcoverings is not only a family business, it is also one that boasts a long and sttccessful history to back it. The first stare opened its doors for business in 1907 with Harvey Burritr’s grandfather and great uncle teaming up —- thus the brothers in the monicker. The founders even- tually passed the business over to rwo of their sons. One of them was Harvey's father. Harvey joined his father and started working with him in 1974, The rest, as they say, is history. Trends One of the things Burritt finds particularly exciting about the floorcoverings business is a recent trend that has seen the business come under the influence of fashion. Not only does chat serve to revitalize che industry, but also makes the business more creative. Burritt sees this trend being driven by the many women involved in the purchasing end of the industry. President Harvey Burritt and sales manager Jerry Martin obviously pleased to be up and running. So, another local store was opened shortly thereafter, but space constraints limited its ability to offer the kind of selection Burritt and company wanted to offer. Call it a North Shore lesson. “Maybe it was better in the long run because even though we lose the busi- ness in the meantime, we've come back back bigger and better chan ever,” said Burritt. Does the company plan to continue expanding at the present fast pace? “No, now it’s time to develup the business from these locations,” said Burritt in the midst of the chaotic environment of the North Shore store being readied for its grand opening, Asa result, it also gives Burritt Bros. a leg up on their com- petition because three of the company’s owners are women. “The buyers that tend to be women really appreciate the fashion focus of our busi- ness which, in turn, is largely due to the women in our business,” said Burritt.
