no,th shore news MAIL BOX Media missing the federal debi issue Dear Editor: Having read many editorials much the same as “Open and Shut” (April 20 News) could you explain a few things? Ifso many requests are made of the FOI, why do we only hear of the ones thar make the NDP look bad? Clearly the media is on a witch hunt, Most requests vindicate the government, ch? If the financial record of the NDP is so bad, why hasn’t the media ever said anything about the following: #@ Grant Devine’s Conservatives bankrupt; @ the second worst record was cun up by Conservative governments in Nova Scotia and Manitoba (a de); ® the next worst record falls on the Conservatives in Alberta; @ the worst five-year record was turned in by the Vander Zalm government here in B.C. ($13.5 billion). You know, the Socreds of the no-debt promise. T can’t recall anyone in the media comment- ing, abour these matters. Gee, is this a clear trend? The federal debt: $600,000,000,000 — B.C.’s share, $80,000,000,000. The federal deficit: $19,000,000,000 — B.C.’s share, $2,525,000,000. B.C,’s debt: $30,000,000,000. B.C.’s deficit: $185,000,000. By observing B.C.’s debt and deficit, you create an illusion. Why? Clearly the federal record is far worse — and nothing said by the media. What a cover up! David Cook North Vancouver the help from another lady managed to get the children out of the car, Only the police Firefighters lauded Dear Editor: Recently another letter in your newspaper was “bashing” the fire departments and it’s time to put things straight. My son would be dead if it were not for a West Vancouver fireman. The fire department arrived at his accident crucial minutes before the ambu- lance The ambulance men were the prompt and excellent care from the firemen in atten- dance. In December 1996 my daughter's car was hit by a car which ran a red light. The car was a write-off. My daughter, eight months pregnant, saw her children in their car seats, bload on her little son’s fice: the back door of the car on his side was jammed. A woman who witnessed and ambulatice ¢ called which was wrong. The fire department should have been called because they have equip- ment needed and with the rear of the car badly damaged there could have been a fire [ understand the ambu- lance service is striving for funds. Maybe they should amalgamate with the fire departments and work out of the fire halls. RF.
