noses in it, as the final straw, -

- vthe sun ‘don’t shine no more.

. We are in some season of
_our discontent —- whether it’s
“summer or winter is moot —
~ but it is none of it nice.

; Whatever, it makes a perfect
climate for a gripe, and we
_old folks are fed up. We've
been through worse and sur-

 vived, granted, but we were
. younger then.

When the juices are flow-

: ing you can put up with any-

’ thing, even perhaps help to
~ fix it, but at our age those -
©, juices have either dried up or

-" curdled.. Don’t test us too far, -

we mutter defiantly.

something like war-time: you
know you have to rally your
forces and make the best of it.
It can't last forever, is what
we tell each other, even
though we are already hearti-
ly sick of it.

( wish I understood the
rationale of the (mostly)
young people involved. Well,
of course it's money, primari-
ly, for less time spent on the
job. Someone just has to tell
them that life doesn't run like
that. “More” has its price, too.

Another thing that bothers
me, with school out, is what
are their children up to while

_ they walk the picket line? OF

course, kids these days are
accustomed to coming home
from schoo! to an empty
house — mother’s at work —
and in too many cases Dad

has split. And for a lot of

them, the little ones, they’ve
been under the care 90 per
cent of the time of some paid
“sitter” since they were three

months old. It gives me the
willies.

Which one is the “real”
Mum to the child? And
whose standards are being
imposed?

In the Thirties, the news-
papers used to show us pno-
tographs of babies and tod-
dlers ia the Communist day-
cares in Russia, where both
women’s we“, and men’s
work was demanded in order
to lift Mother Russia into
leadership.

There would be three or |
four babies in each crib, it
was their play space, their
growing-up place, their
iaunch-into-life place.

We here in Canada tocked
with horror on these pens of
confiriement, eghast at the
idea of separating mother and
Child at that early age.

“Appalling,” we said,
since our mothers were,
almost without exception,
always home when we got
there. If they were occasional-
ly out for an afternoon of
