SEALANT EAL BD) AE LED, te A ne THE JACKBOOTS have struck again. A meeting that was to have been addressed in the Surrey Inn by Paul Fromm of Toronto, Doug Christie, Pat Burns, and myself, among others, was cancelled when the hotel was intimidated by ethnic groups and labor unions. The conference had been called by the Canadian Association for Free Expression (CAFE). But. free expression is now seen as a threat. The meeting took place anyway, but in secret. The early Christians had to do the same sort of thing in the catacombs of Rome. All this with the support of your NDP Attorney General; Ujjal Dosanjh, who said he was “appalled” that such a meeting should be planned. Hardly surprising, since Punjab-born Dosanjh backs Bil! 33, this country's biggest threat to press free- dom. His view is that we can say what we like as Jong as we don’t “promote racism.” He wants a sliding scale of free speech. But that's not the way attorneys general think these days. A few years ago the A.G. in New Brunswick said there was no room in his province for “wicked thoughts.” The Canadian Jewish Congress was also on parade. Marilyn Berger said it was “disconcerting” that the hotel should open its doors to “these people.” Labor unions played > their role, too. CBC radio carried the “news” that Fromm “cele- brates Hitler's birthday.” But he wasn't asked about that. If the pressure groups claim he did, that's good enough.
