ON A.day trip excursion
to Bowen Island’ in the
-early fall I had the oppor-
tunity to sketch this pro-
minent heritage building.
What a:romantic past it must
have had, Countless tourists and
_cottagers ever the years would
stop at the island’s country store
. for ice cream, provisions, and to
“mail off their holiday postcards.
, : Summer. weekends for many
“meant moonlight dancing cruises
from: Vancouver. to Bowen
Island. . ae .
‘As early as ‘1870 Bowen Island
was an. island resort. Joseph
‘Mannion, a Vancouver
‘businessman, built a large home
_for himself on 160 acres fronting
Deep Bay.

in 1890 by Captain John Cates,
who turned the Mannion. house
into a hotel for summer tourists
which he called Hotel Monaco.
In 1920 he sold his holdings to
the Union Steamship Co. which
saw the need for a store,and the
building illustrated was built i

The Union Steamship Co. was
also responsible for. the con-
struction. of. over 100 cottages,
B.C.’s° largest dance pavilion,
tennis courts, a putting green,
stables, and a salt-water swim-

In the °30s it was not unusual
for luxury steamships to dock
and 1,400 people per trip would
set foot on the island to dance,
camp and holiday.

This store has been set back
on the site and restored since the
Greater Vancouver Regional
District purchased the remains of
the Union Steamship Co.’s land
in 1983.

It was in this building that |
met some active members of the
Bowen Island Heritage Preserva-
tion Society who were just leav-
ing with a group for a 1Y%-hour
historic walking tour of a
number of romantic sites along
the route.

My ferry was leaving so on my
next trip that will be a must.

Betore I continue, I would like
to take this opportunity to reassert
my thoughts on replacement ver-
sus rejuvenation.

There is no such thing as
“‘damaged beyond repair’? when
réferring to turf.

With a limitless amount of
money, a lifetime of back-break-
ing work and a warehouse full of
chemical concoctions, anything is
possible.

You: may not get a silk purse
out of a sow’s ear, but there is no
reason why you could not expect
to create a golf green out of a hay
field.

As one of the favorite cliches of
the '80s and ’90s suggests, it is
simply a matter of getting your
priorities straight.

If you are unhappy with the
current condition of your lawn
and you want immediate results,
replace it. . ;

On the other hand, if your
problenis are not that severe and
you like to putter more than putt,
take the time to try a little resur-
rection.

Now that that’s off my chest,
let’s get down to the dirt or,
perhaps more correctly, the ‘‘top-

As you can see, I am still using
the quotation marks. That is
because the most accurate descrip-
tion for that material we refer to
as topsoil should be the medium
on which we grow our turf.

I know it sounds a bit pompous .
—~ after all, we are just mucking
about in the dirt —. but there is
more here than meets the eye.

First, the word ‘‘dirt’’ is more
accurately used to describe things
found ground into the kids’
clothes and/or gossiped . about
over the garden gate. .
