forms of the 20th century.
Whether exalted to the status of
“thigh art’ on one’s wall or
disparaged as a mode of cheap
advertising, it is accessible to all
precisely because it is inescapable.
As should be obvious by now,
qualitative distinctions favoring
so-called serious or “fine’’ art, as
opposed to popular art, are
seldom countenanced in this col-
umn.
Though their aims are different,
‘neither is intrinsically superior to
the other, for both produce fine

and mediocre examples of their
kind.
