We don’t ban driving so why
put a ban on canyon diving?

Speaking as a few life-long
North Shore residents, we wish to
protest the notion of any form of
ban on swimming in Lynn Canyon
Park as proposed by North Van-
couver Council member Ernie
Crist (‘Swim ban sought,’? Aug.

+34).

It is undeniable that each of the
deaths that occured in the park
was tragic. But they were tragic in
the same sense that someone who
runs a red light and winds up kill-
ed is a tragedy: we sacrifice a
great deal of money (and a lot of

The normally quiet cove cliff
area in Deep Cove was rocked by
an explosion and fire on Monday,
August 17 at 4 a.m.

The Fire Services Communica-
tion Centre received the alarm as
a fire in a back yard and initiated
a single-engine response according
to standard operating procedures.

Much to the surprise of arrriv-
ing firefighters, they found a fully
involved structure fire which had
spread to the neighbor’s garage
and was threatening the adjoining
home.

The District of North Van-
couver Fire Services wishes to
commend every citizen who
assisted the victims and helped
firefighters in the contro! of this
blaze. The support this communi-
ty displayed was genuinely an act
of people helping people!

our busier intersections. But some
people are inclined to try and run
red lights. And, all too often,
somebody gets killed.

So what do we do? Do we ban
driving in order to curb the
danger? Of course not. We forge
ahead in the knowledge that some
people ignore the warnings, and
pay the price.

The same is true of those who
chocse not to heed the many
large, obvious warnings posted
throughout Lynn Canyon Park.

But there was one particular
aspect of Mr. Crist’s reasoning
that was actually alarming in a
broader sense. Cunsider his
Statement that “tA society which
prohibits smoking in public
places, which requires seatbelts in
cars, you can’t jaywalk — such a
society has a right to prohibit
swimming in these pools.”*

Good Lord, what is he talking
about? He seems to be saying that
since we've established a few
restrictions to control a) the pollu-
tion of air by a minority of indi-
viduals in a public place; b) the
safety equipment in vehicles
designed by auto manufacturers;
and c) how pedestrians navigate
man-made blacktop; then there’s
ho reason we shouldn’t dictate the
use of our environment birthright.

Sorry, Mr. Crist, tut the
freedom of the individual still ex-
isis in this country. Speaking for
what may well be the majority of
North Shore residents, the cor-
respondents of this letter do not
need — nor want — any politician
to tell us what areas of God’s land
we can explore, and on what
terms.
