The announced cuts in the $93,135,989 budget included 96 full-time teaching positions and the district’s highly regarded elementary band and strings pro- gram and the popular outdoor school program. District 44 superintendent Robin Brayne told the standing-room- only board meeting that ‘‘we are, as a district, absolutely nowhere near maintaining the 1992-93 programs and services at the By A.P. McCredie Contributing Writer 1991-92 level." The superintendent «Iso outlin- ed the number of positions elimi- nated by the new budget: @ 96 full-time teaching positions — of which 33% result from the elimination of programs; @ seven Distzict 44 administration positions; posi- tions in administration time in elementary and secondary schools @ and 26 full-time equivalent support staff. Brayne said the numbers repre- sented positions that have been eliminated, not actual layoffs. The impact will be softened, he said, by retirements and other forms of attrition. Trustees voted to add an ap- pendix to the budget when sub- mitting it to the Ministry of Education that not only detailed the numbers behind the program cuts, but also summarized the im- pact of the loss of the programs on the students, the community, and all citizens of North Van- couver. West Vancouver-Capilano MLA Jeremy Dalton told the board that he would present the facts and figures of District 44’s 1992-93 school budget to the pro- vincial tegislature following the Easter recess.
