Buried oil tanks sought WORKERS WITH the Environment Youth Corps joined forces with local fire departments this summer to hunt out abandoned residential underground storage tanks (‘RUSTs”) that may be leaking oil. Randy Lake, who supervised a crew of students working with the North Vancouver District Fire Department, says that while 3,000 tanks have been surveyed, it is estimated that 4,000 more tanks in the District have yet to be check- ed. Thirty per cent of the ones surveyed by the students were found to contain significant amounts of oil and contaminated water. Leaking, corroded tanks can contaminate surrounding soil and underground streams. Both North Vancouver District and West Vancouver had En- vironment Youth Corps crews working this summer, and North Vancouver City plans to have a crew next year. A new set of student workers are now starting work on the project in North Vancouver District.
