Connell in *1 spot

GRANT CONNELL was able to
rise to the occasion at Davis Cup
play this weekend in Toronto,
carrying the Canadian Davis Cup
tennis team into the prestigious
World Group.

Connell was thrust into the No.
1 singles player spot on the na-
tional team when Andrew Szna-
jder injured his hand in the week
leading to the tournament.

On Sunday, the left-handed
Connell scored his biggest triumph
with his win over the Netherlands’
Mark Koevermans, 7-6 (7-5), 7-6

(7-5), 6-3.

The match broke the tie in the
best-of-five series. Tne two coun-
Iries were knotted at two matches
apiece going into the Connell-
Koevermans match.

Chris Pridham of Ontario had
earlier lost a 7-6(7-5), 6-4, 6-3
decision to Koevermans and a 4-6,
6-3, 6-0, 7-5 match to Paul
Haarhuis.

Connell’s win elevates Canada
into the World Group, an clite
group of the top 16 tennis coun-
tries in the world.
