and give up after discovering just
how much work the project en-
tails.

“The time consumption is
substantial,’’? explains North Van-
couver’s Pierre Poirier, the owner
of All-Wood Furniture Restoration
and a furniture refinisher for 12
years. ‘‘A lot of people don’t
know there is so much time in-
volved in refinishing just one piece
of furniture.’’

’ That is just one of the reasons it
is a good idea to have the job done
by professionals.

For just one chair — an all-
wood Colonial-type piece, for in-
stance — refinishers are looking at
a total of about 12 hours for a
complete refinishing job.

Couple that 12 hours with about
one full day for coats of finish to
dry, and the job takes a lot longer
before the finished product is
ready to resume its place in the
home.

“When you work at home you
have to (apply the coats of finish)
by brush,’ explained Poirier.
“That takes a long time to dry; in
the workshop we do it so it dries in
about 15 minutes.”’

As proper facilities ‘‘can make a
heck of a difference with the
finish,’ having a_ less-than-ade-
quate workspace may not mean the
job is a total loss, but the end pro-
duct is likely to suffer.
