28 - Friday, August 5, 1988 — North Shore News iT V-8 engine gives Cadillac power From page 27 North American market, and the new engine’s peak torque of 240 foot-pounds at 2800 r.p.m exceeds the 235 foot-pounds at 3200 r.p.m of Allante’s high-output sequen- tial-port fuel injection (SF 4.1 litre V8 for honors as the highest- torque front-drive engine currently sold. In the critical areas of quality, reliability and durability (QRD), the DFI 4.5 engine is expected to take up where the DFI 4.1 leaves off as General Motors’ most trouble-free powerplant. An unprecedented level of start of production reliability has been demonstrated by pilot engines manufactured with production tooling and’ equipment ~— not hand-assembled pilot line units — at the Livonia, Mich. Engine Plant. These engines, in fact, have not only met but exceeded the average of the four highest-rated power- trains sold. Computer-controlied torque management has been add- ed to the THM four-speed automatic transaxle to reduce overstressing of the drivetrain components by the more powerful 4.5 litre engine. It works by momentarily limiting engine torque during high-stress situations such as high r.p.m upshifts. The new “‘S Plan’? axle inner joints are a low-friction design utilizing needle bearings in a sliding block, allowing wide-open- throttle acceleration with minima! driveline vibration and torque steer. In addition to a 4 mm increase in cylinder bore (from 88mm to 92mm) to achieve the large displacement, specific improve- ments over the 1987 4.1 litre V8 include the addition of roller lifters and low friction pistons for in- creased efficiency and a tuned. dual-level intake manifold for a flatter torque curve and improved mid-range response. A new low-restriction stylized air cleaner, a larger (43mm) fuel injec- tion throttle body bore and a larger diameter (63.50mm) low- back-pressure exhaust system all contribute to better engine breathing. New stylized aluminum rocker covers help dress up underhood appearance, while the addition of a muffler to the air conditioner compressor reduces operational noise. Another addition — an engine torque strut — and modifications to engine mount stiffness improve engine noise and vibration isolation. A transmission sump temperature sensor replaces the previous switch for enhanced reliability, and new high- temperature seals improve the leak-free durability of the power steering gear and pump. Newly available on Eldorado is an electronically controlled Teves anti-lock braking system (ABS), which automatically prevents wheel lock-up to ensure steering contro! even during panic and slippery surface stops. It does so by sensing the rotational speed of all four wheels and momentarily reducing braking pressure as re- quired to prevent lockup. Thus the driver may continue pressing on the brake pedal while concentrating on steering, and will feel only a slight pulsation of the pedal to indicate when the ABS is working. Brake noise is minimized for 1988 with new brake pad and front brake rotor materials. Eldorado’s fully independent suspension system with front coil electronic, springs and rear transverse leaf spring, has been refined for 1988 with front and rear struts retuned to improve the ride characteristics of ABS-suspension models. The European-feel touring suspension option has also been returned for even more supple road manners, and its winter weather capability is enhanced by the addition of Goodyear Eagle GT +4 high performance tires with mud and snow rating. The touring suspension’s new 15-inch styled aluminum «‘:eels and large Eagle GT+4 tir.s are also available as an option with the standard suspension. The 1988 Eldorado’s wet arm wiper blades emit fluid on the out-wipe only for more efficient operation, while a new bail bearing wiper motor and a_ submerged washer fluid pump reduce noise. Also new are a more reliable control unit for the electric engine cooling fan and an increase in us- able fuel capacity from 68.1L to Ti.1L (18.0 to 18.8 gallons) for in- creased driving range. Also included on the long list of standard Eldorado features are power 4-wheel disc brakes, power rack-and-pinion steering, 14-inch styled aluminum wheels, four- speed automatic overdrive transax- le with viscious converter clutch, electronic level control, climate control with sunload sensor, floor console (with floor shifter, two storage compartments, fold-down armrest and rotating cup holder/ coin retainer), side window defog- gers, on-board diagnostic system and tungsten halogen headlamps and cornering lamps.
