I ose work with are kids that would not otherwise be involved in communi- ty projects, They’re non-joiners,”’ he said. Huestis said although the pro- gram has tried to focus on ‘“‘street kids’’, all jocal teenagers are en- couraged to take part. “In the beginning | did a lot of outreach on the streets to contact the kids hanging around 7-Elevens and other youth hang-outs, to try to attract them to the drop-in cen- tre. The idea behind that is to give - these kids a place to be — it's an alternative activity for them to in- teract socially in a supervised facil- ity,”’ he said. Huestis said the teen drop-in, located at William Griffin Com- munity Centre, now attracts as . many as 100 teenagers. “The kids were really very hap- py. to have a drop-in. You could call this a kind of clubhouse.”’ He said the drop-in is. run in- formally, and through it teenagers are introduced to various recre- ational programming offered in conjunction with the-North Van- couver Recreation Commission. The Capilano Youth Program is funded through community and government donations.
