The collector of the sales slips is John Hadinger, a sprightly man who celebrated his 83rd birthday last month. He joined Silver Harbour in 1975 and almost unmediately embarked on his campaign of collecting the slips, which Super-Valu redeems by giv- ing a $20 voucher for every $5,000 of value. With these vouchers Silver Harbour purchases items to use for presents for their bir- thday parties. There is a par- ty every month, and cach per- son present who has had a ‘birthday that month receives asmall gift, beautifully wrap- ped by one of the members. Another member does all the purchasing. In 1974, while wandering ‘through Lynn Valley Mall, as it was then known, he was of- fered a job as caretaker. After repeated offers and after consulting his wife, he decided to accept. Once again hard work and dependability made him indispensable to the management, and, when he insisted he really wanted to retire, they offered him the easier job of watchman, which he held until 1982. At Silver Harbour, John Hadinger is already a legend. In the past three vears, he has collected a total of $274,272 in sales slips. His prize is one 42 inches long which shows a total of $283. It is not unusual for him to collect $1200 or $1300 in an after- noon, but his best was the day before his birthday; on December 18 he collected $6,026.58. - A favorite quotation, brought from Hungary, is, “A bashful beggar has an empty stomach.’’ Hadinger doesn’t believe in being bashful. He brings to his self- imposed task the same en- thusiasm, commitment, and sheer enjoyment‘ that has characterized his whole life. This is a man who thoroughly enjoys what he is doing, and the people of Silver Harbour hope he will be doing it fora long time.
