Vancouver resident Harry Crawshaw, 84, left Wednesday to run across Canada and back, and he hopes to break a record along the way. He’s hoping to beat the previous record of 81 days for a one-way cross- country run set by Dan Lowndes in 1979. He’s confi- dent he'll do it. “‘Pve not a doubt in the world [| can do it,’’ a fit- looking Crawshaw said on the weekend. ‘‘I'’m not going to tackle something I think | can’t do.’’ He left Wednesday from Victoria to begin the cross- country trek to St. John’s, Newfoundland, and it’s this leg of the journey in which he hopes to break the record. Once in St. John's he'll pause only long enough to regain his wind, and then he’ll jog back across Canada — this time to raise money for cancer prevention research. To beat the record, Crawshaw figures he'll have to cover about 112 km (70 las Bazso photo CROSSING THE FINISH line to the accolades of the crowd of Sunday's Marathon, Harry Crawshaw used the competition as a warm-up to his cross Canada run which began Wednes- day. Crawshaw didn't run the full distance, saving himself for the few thousand miles ahead of him. WEEKEND WALKERS Join the happy hikers Car hovers om peqular low cost gas! He’s been in training for the big run for over a year, and on Sunday he ran in Vancouver's Inter- national Marathon to limber for the cross-Canada run. ‘‘T don’t go out and do just a mile or two,’’ Crawshaw said. ‘‘]’m in training for the whole thing. I’m not going into this blind.’’ The red-haired oc- togenarian, who proudly wears a T-shirt proclaiming him as Canada’s oldest run- ner, is no stranger to athletics and marathons. He has a black belt in karate, is an avid hang-glider and wind-surfer, and has run in nine marathons and one triatholon. He’s cycled across Canada twice — once in 1976 and again in 1980. He claims to have set a 1S-dgy record during the 1980 cycling trip, but that claim has-been disputed. To avoid any disputes this time, the London-based Guinness Book of World Records will be monitoring the run, he said. So what makes an 84-year- old man attempt a feat which would make younger runners cringe? What makes Harry Crawshaw run? ‘‘Why do I do it? Because ws a thrill, it’s a thrill,” Crawshaw said with a smile. He also believes it’s impor- tant to raise money for cancer prevention research, and last of all, he’s determin- ed. A veteran of two world wars, Crawshaw wore braces on his legs for 18 years following an air accident dur- ing the Second World War. ‘‘I believe anything is possible,’’ he said. ‘‘I believe most people can overcome anything if they put their %y : . mind to it.
