NORTH SHORE Food bank is okay — so far FOR THE first time in the Vancouver Food Bank’s history, about 200 people were turned away empty-handed when demand outstripped supply a week ago Wednesday. by LOUISE TURNER At the North Shore depot, however, it was business as usual as they were able to provide hampers for all of the people in line. On Wednesday, only about 140 persons registered for food supplements, says North Shore spokesman John Hegeman, but he ex- pects the numbers to increase again going into April. According to Hegeman, about seven of the volunteers on the North Shore are also recipients of food hampers, who have been taken up with the spirit of the organization. He remarked the Food Bank often receives unusual, but welcome, donations. The van, for instance, that is used to bring the hampers over to the North Shore was donated and painted by the employees of Air Canada. Last week, along with the necessary staples of bread, vegetables and canned goods, came !0 flats of bran muf- fins, compliments of Rotary Bakery, the flour being donated by Robin Hood. “d's really a great feel- ing,’ says Hegeman, ob viously pleased by the response from the public.
