Dogs and cats routinely ex- hibit intelligence and cunn-. ing. Moreover, who is to say that the love of a ‘‘dumb animal’’ is ultimately any less a thing in God’s eye than the love we know among ourselves, which so often proves to be so ephemeral? One of the most exciting breakthroughs of our age, for anyone with even a spark of curiosity about the mystery of life, has been the. series of remarkable discoveries concerning the in- telligence of not only animals (such as-chimps which can teach sign language to their offspring) but fish, birds and even insects, all- of which have proven to be far more ‘aware’? than we had dared or cared to believe. The ethical implications are enormous. That’s one of the real challenges of our time — to come to terms with the news that the beasts of the fields are closer to us than we dreamed. Yet... In B.C., we have a so- called environment minister, Tony Brummett, who is so ig- norant that he calls wolves ‘*one of the most dangerous, vicious, wasteful and unrelenting killers in ex- istence,’’ and then supports a scheme to send the equivalent of helicopter gunships out to slaughter them. Wrong, Mr. Brummett. When it comes to ~ being dangerous, vicious, wasteful and unrelenting killers, it is human beings (perhaps especially provincial cabinet ministers of the distinctly redneck variety) who take the prize. No contest. As for the hunters in nor- thern -_B.C., who -want to decimate the wolf population so they themselves can carry on with decimating the mountain sheep and elk populations as they have been doing all along, what can I say? There’s nothing new about the practice of finding scapegoats, in this case the wolves, who are being blam- ed for a decline in the game animal populations. What Cro-Magnon rubbish! Remove all the hunters and the guides and their rifles (and helicopters) and see how ‘quickly the game populations ” recover, wolves or no wolves. The practice of scapegoating goes back to the dawn of time. It is still prac- tised among such folk as the Caffres of South Africa, who take a'goat into a sick man’s room so that the evil spirit haunting the man_ will transfer itself to the goat, which is led out into a desert and abandoned.
