Last Sunday, a team com- posed mostly of LGH doc- tors won the B.C. Corporate Cup over 89 other teams, most of whose members were much younger than the doctors. And the leader of the British Columbia Medical Association team, “the body mechanics” says his team beat the younger com- petitors because they do more than tell their patients to exercise, they actually live a healthy lifestyle. Dr. lan Morgan, who practises in North Van- couver, says most of the LGH doctors “are interested in having fun, and enjoying life rather than running around trying to make money.” LGH has a “high percen- tage of doctors who are fit, who exercise five or six times a week. We practise what we preach,” Morgan says. Twelve of the [5 people on the BCMA team are Lions Gate doctors, Morgan says. As winners of the 1983 SunLife Corporate Cup, they will enjoy a dinner at the Horseshoe Bay Kee restaurant, and a raft trip down the Chilliwack River mn August. The Corporate Cup 1s held annually, and ts co- sponsored by SunLlife Assurance Action B.C and the YMCA This year it was held at Swangard Stadium in Bur- naby on May 29. There were 1350 compettors (10> men and S women on cach team) from 90 teams competing in the 12 track and field events The BCMA team won with 402 points, ahead of the defending BC Tel cham- pions, the “Receivers”, who had 387 points. Winners of the Last But Not Least Award for last place were the Vancouver Courier and Touche Ross and Co. Morgan says the average age of his team members was 37 or 38, while the average age of the other teams was about 24. Not only were the BCMA team members older than other competitors, but the team was only organized about !1 days before the event, and team members only had one _ practice together. However, Morgan says he coached all his team members individually as well. . He says he has always been interested in track and field, and used to compete when younger. All team members exercise about five or six times a week, and four or five of the team members used to be top class athletes. “We had very good depth. We were strong in all events,” Morgan says. As an example of the shape his team members were in, Morgan mentions Dr. Ed Abbott, a North Van- couver obstetrician, who was up all night before the Cor- porate Cup, delivering a baby, ran two or three races in the Cup, and went back on duty that night. But Morgan says his team members are not workaholics. “We work hard and we play hard, We're a well relaxed, well balanced team.” He says doctors should promote a healthy lifestyle through setting an example. The other members of the team were Dr. Mark Boileau, a North Vancouver general practioner: Dr. Joanne’ Blacksand; Dr. Michael Davidson, a North Vancouver family physician; Dr. Jack Taunton, who works at UBC; Dr. Alastair Carruthers, a Vancouver dermatologist; Dr. Connie Lebrun from North Van- couver; West Van Dr. John Gould and his wife Chris; Mary Puddicombe, wife of a North Vancouver doctor: Dr. Mike O'Neil, who prac- uses in North Vancouver: CONTINUED ON PAGE B3 @2ndAnnual — Volvo Garage Sale Summer Soccer School Please Ww date prefered THE VIDEO STORK Movie & Machine Rentals FREE Delivery & Pick-up Service Also available Colecovision as well as computers Phone tor particulars 195 Mon.-Thur.
