Judge D.T. Wetmore handed down the sentence in Vancouver County Court Friday, having previously found the North Vancouver resident guilty of arson. What concerned the judge was rehabilitation of the accused and the protection of the public. He compared ae releasing Whittaker without a jail sentence to permitting a man with a loaded gun aboard a crowded bus. Whittaker had earlier been convicted of starting a fire to the recreation room door in the basement of 175 East Fifth Street, in North Van, a building where he was occupying an apartment on the main floor at the time. Simular fact evidence had _linked him with fires at five locations in North Van- couver. Three of them occurred during one night, last July 23.
