C2. - Sunday, August 29, 1982. -.North Shore News ‘Poor man’s Bristol Cream’ is a bargain FROM PAGE C1 Corban’s Cabernet Pinotage (made from the Cabernet Sauvignon and Pinotage grapes) is only available in the specialty stores in B.C., for $5.70. I don’t know if it was the bottle, but the wine I tasted had a slightly off aroma — it almost smelled and tasted like oysters. Besides this distinctly unpleasant taste, the wine had no character whatsoever to speak of. All three wines are or- dinary at best, and better wines can be had for cheaper prices. But the Chenin Blanc, if it does become available in B.C., will definitely be a good buy. Don Maisey of Corbans says the wine should sell for about $5.90, and certainly no more than $6. It tastes crisp and dry, but with a definite touch of fruit. All in all, a perfect wine for a hot summer day. Though New Zealand wines are not yet well known here, Corbans has 22 to 24 per cent of the imported sherry market with its Select Medium Sherry, which Maisey called “the poor man’s Bristol Cream.” For the price ($5.65 for 750 ml, $7.30 for 1 litre) it certainly compares favorably with Bristol Cream, which will set you back $6.35 for 375 ml. It is nothing to shout about, and can't stand up to the more expensive Spanish sherries, but the taste is pleasant and the price is right.
