Walk on water

CALGARY (UPC) - Her hair
whipped by the wind as she
propels herself across
Calgary's Glenmore
Reservoir, Sue Bennett is
proof positive that not only
can people walk on water,
they can move at a very
respectable speed.

“It’s‘no joke,” insists her
father, Dick Bennett, in-
ventor of what are believed
to be the world’s first water
gliders. “At first people are
really skeptical. When all of
a sudden they see you, the
expression on their faces is
really fun.”

But Bennett and partner
Ken Murray, both former
Maritimers, have
deliberately stayed away
from calling the invention
water walkers.

“There’s a negative at-
titude attached to water
walking inventions, mainly
because of past failures,”
said Bennett. “About 12

patents have been registered
in the last 30 years, most of
them in the United States.
None of them work.

“Besides, these move too
fast to be called walkers.
They really do glide across
the surface of the water at a
respectable speed.”

Bennett, a 42-year-old
former salesman, has _ in-
vested about $100,000 in
designing the prototype and
now hopes to find someone
to manufacture the gliders
and pay them a royalty or
buy the idea outright.

Alberta and New Brun-
swick governments and
various downhill = ski
manufacturers have been
enthusiastic about sup-
porting a glider industry.
However, poor economic
conditions could cause
delays.

However, Bennett insists
there's a market for water
gliders.
