Axworthy estimated the * program will cost the federal government between $6 and $7 million annually and benefit thousands of women when the program is fully in place. Women’s organizations and MPs from the maritime provinces have been pressing the federal government to change legislation requiring women working on fishing boats to lump their incomes in with their spouses.
