Two years ago when Lions
Bay's Colin James was surfing
on the Little Big Band ritf his
weapon of choice was a re-
issued red Gretsch Sparkle
Jet.

This time out James is
working a baby blue °63
Fender Strat on his fresh dise
Fuse. Reunion with a vintage

. Fender was a long time com-

-ing.. Savs James, “This is my
new baby. 1 boughe it. last
year. Thad my eye on it, For
about a year it was sitting ina
music store in Toronto. It
was a little pricey, but I final-
ly got a goad deal.

“I hadn’t had a vintage

grat since I heartbreakingly
lost my °59 in an accident,
‘back when we used to tour in
a semi. Back in °9) our truck
hit.a bridge and got ripped
open like.a tin can.

“A bunch of stuff spilled
out into a creck (including
the °59). It happened at Rock
Creek, on the way from
“Kelowna. It’s nice to have my
hands on a guitar that’s been
around for a while again. You
can feel it in the fret board.”

. James has-been feeling it
more in’ the feet in recent
weeks. He’s been on a bit of a
whiclwind media blitz, talking
up Fisse.
; Blues” purists used to
James interpreting the likes of
Robert Johnson and Muddy
Waters will hear a more pop
and R&B-criented excursion.

Northey is among the best
lyric and tunesmiths in the
business.

The James-Northey  cre-
ative convergence came by
way of former Odds drummer
Pat Steward, who played with
James in Little Big Band. Says
James, “I always respected
Odds. ! always thought they
were a great band and I’ve
always loved Craig’s voice.

“Someone who was work-
ing. with me with the Little
Big Band got the offer to go
out with Amanda Marshall so

U had to find a drummer to
fill ina bunch of dates. [ went
down to check out Pat
Steward. Pd met him before.
It was Sharkskin (Steward and
Northey's K&B side project)
ata club and [ ended up
watching Craig all night and
much to my surprise, Craig
had this Jove of R&B, which
as news to me.

“FP had always thought of
Craig: as pop and English-
influenced. We got to talking
and talked about - getting
together to write. The next
day T had a song called Hide
(the first single from Fuse).
We were supposed to get
together for half an hour to
an hour and about tour or five *
hours later we rolled out of
here {Fames* Lions | Bay
home) and I said to my other
half, ‘I wish we had of cone
that a long time ago.’ We got
along great. That's half the
battle. If you're going to”
spend a year in a room off and
on with somebody, it better
be fun. It was instantly easy
and relaxed.” .

The fun won’t be stopping
any time soon.

Steward and gang touring
