Jagerhof’s hearty Euro-cuisine From page 34 Biarritz and on to Gypsy and Nierstcin, the fried breaded cutlets come stuffed with everything from aspara- gus and cheese to pineapple, ham and cheese. It’s a simple marriage of pounded turkey breast, stewed red cabbage and your choice of pan-fried potatoes or spactzle — the German version of pasta. And that marriage remains one resistant to all external forces of enlight- ened low-fat dining. (Much applause here from veteran Jagernauts everywhere.) | Not to be overlooked in this successful union is Jagerhof’s pricing. Doubrava’s schnitzels come in small and large portions, the former all weigh in ac under $11. Not a glamorous mar- riage, perhaps, but one that can be counted on to deliver good dollar value. Aside from schnitzels, the restaurant offers a wide selection of burly middle European dishes such as Bavarian Meat Loaf ($9.85), Munich Style Beer Sausage ($8.95), Kasseler ($11.95 for smoked pork chops with sauerkraut and pan-fried potatoes), Chicken Salzburg ($13.95), Debrecziner Sausage ($8.95) and the weighty Jagerhof platter ($15.95 for a serving plate laden with most of the above). The prices on most of the items listed have risen, at most, $1 over the past few years. And the quality of the food delivered remains as consistent as the restaurant’s pricing. A sampled Santa Fe Schnitzel came stuffed with Monterey Jack Cheese and green jalapeno peppers. The fate also included a side of ively salsa and the standard cabbage and pan-fried pora- to accompaniment. Make no mistake, diners, this is hefty fried food coun- try, but the dishes are pre- ared with the same sure and that has been prepar- ing the same menu for the past 17 years. Nothing par- ticularly exciting or surpris- ing. Just schnitzel straight up. Down it with a Warsteiner lager and follow it with a slab of strudel lashed with whipped cream. You have all week to repent. The Jagerhof’s wine list is small ($16 to $30), with German and French selec- tions prevailing. Only house and one imported option are offered by the glass. Service is prompt and workmanlike. Jagerhof has moved but nothing much has changed. Jagernauts would want it no other way. Dog Corrective measures Sandwiches and sap- phires: Last week’s Table Hopping luncheon round- up, which included Quizno’s, stated that the sandwich bar was “in the old Bishop’s Jewellers store.” For diners and jewel- ry buffs confused by that information, Qsizno’s occu- pies half of Bishop’s. John Bishop’s venerable North Vancouver jewelry store is, of course, very much alive and well and occupies the remaining half of its original store front at 1598 Lonsdale Ave., North Vancouver, (988-4717).
