22 - Sunday, September 13, 1992 - North Shore News September adds to skin care worries NOW THAT we are well into September, most teenagers have had to deal with their first day back to school, where initial im- pressions seem so crucial. Shopping for the hottest back- to-schoo! clothes, accumulating the necessary (and hippest) school supplies, and updating their hair and makeup were among the top priorities in late August. Rapidly making its way to the top of the list, however, is the growing concern of proper skin care among teenagers. And this concern goes on even after those first impressions have faded. As recently as ten years ago, skin care was primarily a concern among women over the age of 30. Studies are now showing that the most pivetal time to care for your skin is during the teenage years. **Developing an effective skin care regimen early on in the teenage years is crucial to help en- sure a smooth, younger-looking complexion later in life,’’ says Darrell Doughty, a skin care specialist. Teenage skin care tends to be a bit trickier because teen skin can be oilier and more prone to acne breakouts. Although an effective teenage skin care routine may vary slightly depending on the frequen- cy and severity of breakouts, here are some basic skin care tips: Wash your skin twice a day — morning and evening. It is especially important to’ remove your makeup every evening. If your skin tends to be on the oily side, limit the use of ex- foliants to twice a month. They can be irritating, particularly to acne-prone skin. Avoid the temptation to pick at acne. This can cause increased redness and inflammation. Fingernails can actually cut the skin and leave scars. If you have oily skin, consider following cleansing with a mild, low-alcohol toner. Over-the-counter and prescrip- tion acne medications can cause dry skin. If you are using an acne medication, consider using a sen- sitive skin or oil-free moisturizer based on your dermotologist’s recommendation: Always finish your daily skin care routine with a light, easily absorbed moisturizer that leaves skin soft and smooth.
