Contest a lesson for WV designer

‘*The contest was horrible and I
lost,’ Hiscox said.

The 2l-year-old designer was
one of six finalists in the student
category of women’s fashion
designs at the prestigious national
contest held earlier this month. He
was selected from a field of 586
designers.

But he was less than pleased
with his debut in Montreal which,
as he tells it, was a comedy of er-
rors.

First, the presentation of his
unique three-piece outfit was total-
ly unsuitable to the outfit’s soft
and harmonious style.

**The way it was presented was

not the way { intended to have it
presented,’’ he said.

The softly-draping design, con-
sisting of a wrap-around skirt,
short jacket with ribbon fastenings
and a white cotton blouse, was
worn by a ‘‘nearly bald’’ and ag-
gressive-looking model, he said.

“It didn’t do much for the out-
fit.””

Moreover, the dresser hadn’t got
the outfit on the model correctly so
that her crumpled panty hose
showed when she walked.

Then, to add insult to injury,
Hiscox had to leave Montreal
without the blouse which was lost
in the post-show shuffle backstage.

However, Hiscox said he didn’t
come away from Montreal empty
handed.

“It made me feel better about
what I’m doing because it was kind
of like reality therapy. It made me
more aggressive in a serious way.
