Ever since Oscar Wilde and other stylish members of the fash- ion set flaunted convention at the turn of the century by tying pocketwatches onto their wrists, the wristwatch has become a veritable item of self-expression. Today the wristwatch is hardly controversial but it’s still regarded as a stylish device, a status symbol, and of course, a necessary aid to punctuality. Styles have changed by the minute. In other words, they have evolved. Marching forward with technology (hello quartz, goodbye digital) watch designers tend to look to the past for design inspira- tion. Watches have been the subject of numerous follies and fads, and they’ve been dedicated to cartoon characters. Now in the 1980s, the wristwatch is acknowledged as a bona fide fashion accessory.
