Fashions in watches
change by the minute

FLEETING TRENDS or timeless
classics, the watch has established
itself as the only fashion accessory
that changes by the minute.

Ever since Oscar Wilde and
other stylish members of the fash-
ion set flaunted convention at the
turn of the century by tying
pocketwatches onto their wrists,
the wristwatch has become a
veritable item of self-expression.

Today the wristwatch is hardly
controversial but it’s still regarded
as a stylish device, a status symbol,
and of course, a necessary aid to
punctuality.

Styles have changed by the
minute. In other words, they have
evolved. Marching forward with
technology (hello quartz, goodbye
digital) watch designers tend to
look to the past for design inspira-
tion.

Watches have been the subject
of numerous follies and fads, and
they’ve been dedicated to cartoon
characters. Now in the 1980s, the
wristwatch is acknowledged as a
bona fide fashion accessory.

According to Emerald Time, a
leading Canadian distributor of
fashion watches, the look is now
towards watches with a traditional

Future trends in watches means
keeping one’s eye on the European
marketplace. For 1988, Richard
Breslin of Emerald Time, predicts
the emergence of bold faces and

extended numerals, of bold col-
ored wristbands, and reptile-look
finishes.

There will be wristbands of color
and texture, and the look of
classic, hand-crafted watches
which are timeless.

Shore Pageant. The event is open
to women 17 years old (at the time
of the August crowning) to 21
years old who have never been
married, lived common law or had

Dove Search for Canada’s Classic
Beauty. .The nation-wide search
wants to find the woman whose
complexion, overall appearance,
community involvement and hob-

Expert sewer shares secrets

NEW TECHNIQUES and new
products are making it easier than
ever to fashion clothng.

Sewing specialist Cecelia
Podolak, an instructor of apparel
design for the University of British
Columbia’s School of Family and
Nutritional Sciences, will share
up-to-date information on fabrics,
interfacings, linings, sewing aids
and machines in a series being held
at UBC for sewing teachers and
experienced sewing enthusiasts.

The sessions will be held on
Mondays and Thursdays, from Ju-
ly 11 to 28 , from 9:30 to 12:30
p.m. at the School of Family and
Nutritional Sciences, 2205 East
Mall.

Participants will make a coat or
jacket using techniques that are
transferred to the classroom. For
registration and information call
the UBC Centre for Continuing

last year. Entry forms are available
