It is a particularly disabling disease, often showing itself in slurred speech, mental and emo- tional deterioration, and uncon- trollable jerking movements of the head, neck, arms and legs. ft strikes members of either sex, usually between the ages of 30 and 45, Many of its victims suffer marked personality changes, mak- ing them strangers to friends and family. According to Dr. Michael Haygen, chairman of the society's Scientifie Advisory Council, there are an estimated 2,500 HD patients in Canada, and for each patient, five or six others are “tat risk’’ of inheriting the disease, Each child of an affected parent has a 50/50 chance of inheriting the defective gene which causes Huntington's disease, and is said to be ‘tat risk.** So far, there is no effective treatment and no known cure. However, recent research has led to the discovery of a marker for the HD gene, and this, in turn, has led to the development of a predic- tive test.
