Let such people in, and hospital corridors will soon be swarming with) mesmerists, herbalists, witch-doctors, regression ju-ju men, faith-heafers, cancer-cure artists and Hari Krishnas, all of whom may be able to work miracles, but none of whom have the basic training a medical man has. Besides, medical doctors can make enough mistakes of their own, without having to be respon- sible for the flubs and bungles of others. Dr. Collins wishes to repeat that he is not an enemy of the chiropractic art, or whatever it is. All he is saying is that banging the bones and pushing the flesh may not be the answer for you. And such treatment is highly unlikely to be the answer if your back- quack wants you to report for tor- ture 14 or [5 times. [f you are not fixed up in five treatments at most, try something else. Your pain may be caused by something the chiropractor can fix with a punch or two, and it may not be. If it is not, you will be better off seeing a general practi- tioner who, although he may not be an expert on lower back pain, should know enough to steer you in the right direction. But if you want to be broken on the wheel or something, don’t let me put you off. To that extent, this is still a free country. It is Dr. Collins's opinion, too, that chiropractors should not be mucking about with X-rays. Many professionals have had a W/V signs A NEW, Engiish-style hanging sign for Troller Pub in Horseshoe Bay was approved by West Van- couver District Council last week. ‘ think it’s going to be fan- tastic,”’ said Ald. Mark Sager, who was full of praise for the design of the wooden sign. The took of the sign is in keep- ing with the downtown beautifica- tion underway in Horseshoe Bay, and the district's planning depart- ment anticipates more applications for similar unilluminated signs made of natural materials. Dave Patrick of Troller Pub told counci] he had been trying to get the sign in place for several years, because the pub cannot be iden- tified from either end of Bay Street, where it is located. Council went on to the ask word to say about that. In his book Back Doctor, Dr. Hamilton Hall of Toronto says thar X-rays have no particular value where common back pain is concerned. (But they are of value to the chiropractor, who will nick you $40 to $60 for taking them.) Dr. Hall states further: “Even when they are shot pro- perly, X-rays have serious limita- tions as a diagnostic tool. Yet chiropractors rely on X-rays ex- tensively. Apparently some of them do not realize that the physical changes seen on the X- tay plate will not necessarily be the ones responsible for the pain. Doctors have an old expression: you can’t X-ray pain.”” Nearer to home, Dr. Michael Livingston of Richmond also believes that X-rays are mostly unnecessary in this field. In his ex- cellent book Back Pain, he quotes an international authority this way: “The information obtained by ordinary X-rays is...mostly irrele- vant...In the maiority of {back J pain) patients, X-ray investiga- tions reveal little that is not suspected on clinical examina- tion."’ The same authority states that “lumbar spine X-rays are associated with a very high gonadal risk." Most chiropractors insist on X- rays. The one with whom I went the 13 rounds did. You can always [| say no, of course, but if you are creaking and groaning like some old ship that can hardly make port, the will is feeble. Neither Hall nor Richmond is professionally anti-bonecracker. Nor do they claim that all chiropracters are bums. But Hall does tell a story about one who “used manipulation of a patient's neck in an attempt to straighten out his patient’s crossed eyes’’. Anyway, on the evidence that’s available, I would not let the manipulators pJay around in the hospitals. Experto credite.
