Theatre and Cap Theatre.
Each theatre company has
scheduled a show at Pres-
entation House for the fall
and/or spring, and in turn,
Presentation House will help
promote the groups.

munity theatre has not had a
fair shake in the past. He
shys away from the word

THEATRE does not have to be professional to be
good, says Doug Cleverley, in charge of promo-
tion for the new Stage 333 at Presentation House,
an alliance of North Shore community theatres.

Stage 333 ts one of Pres-
entation House’s efforts to
turn itself into a ‘viable
community cultural facility’,
Cleverley says, since it has
suffered financial loss over
the past few years. Nine
people were hired over the
summer, on top of the ‘skel-
eton’ staff of five, to see if
the facility could be turned
intO a prosperous centre. By
supporting community
theatre, the house hopes the
community will in turn sup-
port it.

‘‘Before Presentation
House came into being,
there was an outcry for an
arts centre on the North
Shore,’’ Cleverley says.
‘*But unless people support
il, 1 Cannot sustain itself.’’

no matter what, Cleverley
explained. As a result the
house ‘‘brought in unknown
quantities, and because the
smaller theatre groups
couldn’t afford to book here
when the economy went
down, theatre attendance
nose-dived, the bank closed
the place down after the
Wooigatherer, and Tyrell
was let go.”’

Cleverley believes the
house needs consistency in
promotion and quality, and
it needs something wor-
thwhile to draw the = au-
dience. Although he = says
Presentation House can be
utilized in the main by the
community, he doesn’t feel
that should exclude profes-
sional groups.

Cleverley began in theatre
with West Vancouver Little
Theatre when he was 14-
years-old, and by 18 he was
president of the group.
