As you can imagine, this came as somewhat of a surprise for somebody who always believed that any wine could be quaffed out of the bottle, while sitting one a rock in the middle of a river. This amazing revelation came this week at a tasting of German wines at the Four Seasons Hotel in Vancouver. Since this column will also deal with a recent tasting of award-winning Casabelio wines you will be able to gleen from it the names of a large number of fine wines you will surely appreciate (if you trust my taste that is, which is calling for a very large degree of trust on your part. I trained on Jordon Sauterne you know). The Casabello tasting was right. At the top of the award winners was Rhinegarten which won the Grand Gold Diploma of Honour and the Grand Gold Medal. A fruity wine, I found it had a strong and slightly musty taste. Of the three Diploma of Honour and Gold Medal winners, the Chabiis Blanc 1978 gets my vote. Since it was in a carafe bottle (the one with the wide mouth) nobody at the tasting seemed inclined to try it, but I found it had a pleasant very fruity bouquet and a sweet taste. The Semillon 1978 was the only white I found un- pleasant with its very strange bouquet, “like a sofa” I noted, and its musty taste. The Grey Riesting had a strong, slightly harsh taste of riesling grapes but was still quite good. Among the Diploma of Honour and Silver Medal winners was the Gewart- traminer 1978 which I thought was the finest of the although I noted the Pinot had a “soapy bouquet” (where do I dig up these comments?). At the low end of the scale was the Fleur de Blanc and the Johannisberg Riesling both of which received the Diploma of Honour. I have always liked the Fleur de Blanc, but tasting it 106 West 3rd St. North Van, B.C. Phone 984-9741 DEALER FOR & casts.
