OPEN. LETFER TO CNR VICE-PRESIDENT ALEX HART I am concerned about the possibility of a serious ac- cident occuring at the point where Riverside Drive crosses the Canadian National Railway’s tracks in North Vancouver. A collision there between a heavily loaded truck and a railcar containing liquid chlorine could result in widespread damage _ to persons and property in the Seymour area. There have been accidents already. Large trucks moving southward at speeds of thirty miles an hour and more have difficulty negotiating the turn = on Riverside Drive which leads directly onto the tracks. Visibility is limited by ad- jacent buildings and the hkelihood that a train made up of ‘cars carrying chemicals may be stationed or moving on these tracks 1s. — great. - ee crossing is dangerous “Several trucks facing rail traffic have skidded to a halt there in recent weeks. It is therefore only a matter of time until a collision occurs. Something has to be done and quickly. A flashing light coupled with some other kind of alarm installed forty or fifty yards ahead of the crossing is the sort of thing I have in mind. The crossing to which I am referring is also ‘at the junction of Riverside Drive and Spicer Road. So road and rail traffic tends to overlap. This congestion is made much worse by the sharp turn in Riverside Drive which brings large trucks suddenly face to face with railway rolling stock at that point. Much of the freight which the railcars are carrying is hazardous. Hooker Chemicals Ltd. and Electric Reduction Limited = are located a few hundred yards east of this perilous crossing. Tank cars carrying chlorine Canadians living on printed money Dear Editor: Pierre Trudeau's governments have been the greatest spenders” in Canadian history. You could liken his governments to a family who, having an in- come of twelve hundred dollars a month, blithely goes along spending fifteen hundred a month. After a while, when the debt has reached astronomical proportions and no more credit is available, they, set up a printing press and print their own money. Small wonder the Canadian dollar is where it Keep signs off Dear Editor: As election day = ap- proaches, I) would suggest that the vanous politicians who tie up traffic by parading with signs on the onramps to the 2nd Narrows consider their actions. It is the opinion of many that Socrates had a great deal to be concerned about as have the parents of today. Although Soerates was a believer in human virtue, many of his students and followers used his teachings to deny any moral values or beliefs and became self indulging profligates. Socrates lived to see his country collapse in a welter of subversion and mismanagement and _his people lose their democratic rights. Socrates himself was blamed for corrupting youth and was to death.
