Teen heads for Ivy League West Vancouver’s Adrienne Lo Studying for liberal arts degree Judy Smith Contributing Writer A West Vancouver teen will become a preppy at Yale this fall. And if that’s nor cachet enough, Adrienne Lo, 18, chose Yale after being accepted at five of arguably the best schools on the continent. Although there’s no doubt the hard-working and brainy Lo deserves the good fortune, genetics may play some role in her success. After all, the West Vancouver secondary school student isn’t the first hy Leaguer in her family: Lo's dad attended University of Pennsylvania's prestigious Wharton School of Business. And her 90-year-old grandfather in China was chosen from thousands of students for a scholarship to study in America. The vouthful-looking Lo plans to get a liberal arts degree so she can gain the broadest possible perspective of the w vorld. “Pm waiting to be inspired,” said Lo. “I'm strong in many subjects so [ don't want to limit myself.” She credits her family and WVSS principal Warren Hicks for their inspiration and unwavering support. At the airy and bright school ov erlooking West Vancouver and the acean, Hicks said it’s the first time he’s aware of any of his students going to an Ivy League university. “I went to Yale. But I was only there for nvo hours looking for the T-shirt shop,” he laughed. The affable Hicks is definitely not not the kind of principal most Of us grew up with: the martinet marching the hall slapping a riding crop against his thigh springs to mind. ‘Instead he scems genuinely interested and involved in help- ing his students pursue their dreams. In Lo’s case fre wrote letters of recommendation to accom- pany her applications and over the nwo years she was a student there he took the time to counsel her. Hicks is proud of Lo. “She’s in the top 3% of students in achievement.” And _he’s also proud of his school’s record of 70% of the 1,826 WVSS students going on to higher education each year. So it’s with some sadness that this year is his last as principal of the school. He said he'll definitely miss the day-to-day interac- tion with students when he starts his new human resources direc- tor job for the district’s school board. As for Lo she is simply thrilled to be heading off to the states. “Tt’s been my dream since I was a child to go to Yale,” she said. “It’s hard to believe I’m really going.” And even though all freshmen students are required by Yale to live in residence their first year, Lo intends to stay there forall four years. And since competition at Yale will be “brutal” she decided that even after years of grucling courses in the International Baccalaureate Program and a mynad of extra-curricular activities, the irrepressibie Lo is studying grammar and composition cours- es at Capilano College for the summer.
