At a time when other young people her age are finding it hard to get work of any kind, Jane holds a full- time job at the Novaco Day Care Centre. Jane doesn't work for peanuts — she works for nothing. That's right, for 40. plus hours a week Jane willingly subjects herself to the mind-numbing task of caring for 25 active pre-schoolers. A job many wouldn't do for ‘love nor money’, Jane does solely for love — and for the ex- perience. Before investing years in training for her chosen vocation, Jane decided to make sure that working with children was indeed where her future lay. Not only is she. now confident of her choice, Jane also is gaining the all-important experience that will give her an ad- vantage over other would be pre-school teachers in future job-hunting. After working at Novaco for a year, Jane NIGHT SCHOOL NOTES hopes to begin formal training for her profession next Fall. Volunteering isn’t new to Jane. Last year. while in the twelfth grade, she cared for children at the Highlands United Church Drop-In Centre, and through the North Shore Volunteer Action Centre was paired with a senior citizen for whom she did weekly shopping. ‘ Jane’ didn’t volunteer work simply because there were § no paying jobs available - she’s been offered several — but settle for because she wanted the . experience of working in a day care environment. In. . talking to Jane at Novaco, 1 found. her enthusiasm for volunteering | contagious. Would she voluteering? “Definitely, it helps you so much in the work force.
