fater facts ant Dear Editor: The requests of Ross Muirhead and his Friends of the Watershed (Nov, 13 News) regarding road building and log- ging in the Greater Vancouver Water District (GVWD) water supply area do not stand up to scientific scrutiny. The Final Summary Report: on Watershed Management made by inde- pendent agencies at the request of the GVWD has this to say regarding roads and road building: @ “The data indicate that GVWD road construction has no identifiable correla- tion to turbidity at the water intakes.” @ “The short and long-term benefits of roads (allowing access for fire protec- tion, water quality monitoring, forest surveillance and erosion control) far outweigh their relatively minor contri- bution to sediment and turbidity which can be minimized through the use of Rest Management Practices.” f “A recent survey of landslides ... by UBC researchers indicates that only eight out of 319 mass movements A monument to immorality Dear Editor: However innocuous the concept of an AIDS memorial in Stanley Park might appear, at first glance, I fear its promoters and supporters are primarily recruited from that sector of the between 1964 and L989 were caused by roads.” Thurber (1991) indicated that none of the 35 Jandslides that occurred during the (record) 1990/1991 storms -- have been related to the failure of road fill or culverts on the road system.” @ “Logging roads are being constructed according to today’s best management practices to minimize erosion.” Regarding logging and forest: man- agement: @ “Forest practices including timber harvesting are generally conducted in an environmentally sensitive manner with no significant impact on water quality.” @ “The panel found the GVWD con- ducts a sound timber harvesting pro- gram to meet the objectives of the Management and Working plan.” f@ “Patch clearcut harvesting — is used — to achieve a mosaic of forest stands.” f “Al harvested lands are reforested within two years of harvesting.” “Because of the extremely small areas of fresh clearcurs it is highly unlikely Dear Editor: In response to an open thar the current GVWD timber harvest program will have any measurable Hupact on the water regime at the intakes.” @ “The panel found ne evidence to con- clude that present harvesting practices have been a significant causative factor of excess turbidity in GVWD sources.” The GVWD is managed by a dedicat- ed team of experts highly qualified in their individual fields. An independent group of consultants has reported on the operation of ihe whole system, with a few of the findings quoted above. There is much more, but the studs concludes that our water sup- ply is one of the best in North America, if not in the world, Until Ross Muirhead and his Friends of the Watershed come up with scientif- ic studies to confirm their rash state- ments, any thinking local citizen should consider such statements as unsubstan- tial environmental propaganda. James N. Thomson West Vancouver N. Van District net home sweet home No doubt Mr. Crist is not concerned about — being community which would use tactical symbolism to desensitize society's natural antipathy towards sexual deviance. In our country, the main cause for the proliferation of the AIDS virus has been the preference for unnatural sex. So why a natural set- ting like Stanley Park for such a monument? For many it would be a victory symbol for the celebration of unnatural sex. | am sure that a future generation subscribing to common sense and concerned with society’s moral health would have it torn down. M. Lawrence Burnaby letter from Coun, Ernie Crist placed in a recent Sunday North Shore News, the last sentence states: “All in all I am extremely confident that we can meet the challenges we face without forcing many citizens out of their house and home.” Would the North Shore News ask Mr. Crist to explain this “forced out of his house and home,” however this is a deplorable, uncaring and unsettling comment. Just how many is “many”? Does he care where they go? Why is North Vancouver District “forcing citizens out of their house and home”?
